When Readers Don't Understand What Fiction Means

This is going to be a bit of a rant, though a somewhat good natured one (I hope) about something that I have noticed is a bit of an issue when one posts stories of an erotic nature on the internet.

There is a large group of people who don't seem to understand what fiction is.

I noticed this myself on some of my comments on some of the stories I have posted on Literotica, as well as in the comments of other stories I've read on there. Particularly stories that feature women cheating or taking control in some sort of way, people get really mad at this stuff.

I'll share some examples so you really get a sense of what I mean.

On my story "Pregnant and Fucking Her Boss" which is, as you may have guessed, about a woman who is pregnant who ends up having sex with her boss while both are married, these are some of the very angry comments by very offended readers:

"1 star - A pregnant wife cheating with her boss - really? This is just wrong on so many levels. I hate the idea of it, let alone seeing it in print."

Alright, fair enough. That one isn't so bad. The 1 star is a little harsh especially because the story is clearly labelled as containing cheating, and I even included a disclaimer so this reader could have just, SKIPPED IT, knowing it contains subject matter they don't appreciate. But Ok, I'll take it. Moving on!

"I’m always left wondering why the couples stay married. Or even, why did they get married in the first place?"

Well you see...they didn't. Because they don't exist. So...Yeah

"More of a cheating skank trying to cuck hubby. Here's an alternative end...Hubby fi fs put skank wife is fucking the boss. Confronts the boss with an ultimatum to give him $10M tax free for his silence...or tbe hubby takes out a gun and ows him away...and then kicks skank out and files for adultery. He gets a DNA test on the baby, which confirms he is not the father...Hubby gets the money, still shows the bosses wife the alleged adultery and divorces his ass."

(spelling and other general mistakes just left as originally posted because I don't have the time or the interest in fixing that crap) Well...sure if you want to see that story with that ending, then go ahead and write it! (or pay me to write it for you!) I mean, I guess you kinda did write it - poorly - in this comment here so I don't really know what to tell you. Good job? Maybe spellcheck next time?

"Why is this woman married? She doesnt love her husband he doesn't love her so why not get divorced so she can with someone who cares about her?"

Because it's a plot point. In a work of fiction.

This next person left a long comment stating among other things he hoped the husband grew some balls and that the sex was hot but... and finished it off with "Just not into cheating spouse(s) stories." which is fair enough and totally fine but again, then why did you choose to read a story about a cheating spouse? No one forced you. You had all the power to avoid it.

This next comment is my personal favourite, the comment that will never be beaten by any comment ever:

"I hope the whore catches HIV and dies a slow and excruciating death! Women who act like this deserve no other ending!"

I mean...she's fictional soooo...

And also, Who hurt you???

It is also worth noting that other than the one comment wanting the husband to either get the very specific amount of $10 million dollars from, or shoot and kill the boss, the vast majority of the hatred and anger was directed at the woman in this fictional story. Even though both characters were clearly cheating on their spouses. Make of that what you will.

I understand that cheating is a subject that offends a lot of people, and I don't personally condone it though I do find it to be a fascinating subject to write about and I enjoy writing it for the people who do enjoy reading it (of which there are many!) If that's not you, story tags exist for a reason buddy. You have the ability to skip past subject matter that is going to trigger you. There are tons of other stories out there that might tickle your dick the way you want. Go read some.

Now, while it may sound like this bothers me a lot, it really doesn't that much. Mostly I find it amusing, if not at least a little confusing. I do admittedly find it extremely obnoxious when people are warned about something, choose to do it anyways, and then complain about it. Just...why??? And I find it amusing how personally some of these commenters seemed to take the subject, with several even seeming to forget that none of that story is real.

In fact, the only 3 things about that story that have any basis in reality are:

  • the outfit Audrey wears to dinner comes from my closet.
  • the visual of Audrey insisting on wearing this dress that no longer fits properly due to her pregnancy was inspired by...well putting on said dress while pregnant and laughing at how absurd it now looks stretched over my no longer lean body.
  • the picture I'm using to link to the story (you can see it below!) is of me in that specific dress. (Because why buy stock images when you can just take your own?)

And that's it.

There was no dinner with the boss (I am my own boss thank you very much) and no one cheated on their husband (why bother? I'm entirely fulfilled by mine,) and though I'm sure similar scenarios such as the one that take place in my story have happened many times in the real world, this particular story is a work of fiction. I'm sorry if that ruins the fantasy for anyone who might read it, and who enjoys that type of theme, but apparently we need to make it more clear for the sensitive types who enjoy hurting their own feelings for some reason.

In summary: Why are people?

Happy Reading!

  1. I really appreciated your ability to write this with a lighthearted spirit. If these people believe everything they read I’m seriously wondering what craziness they think is going on in this world.

    1. Thanks for the feedback! I'm sure someday it might get under my skin on a more serious level, but I'm pretty Ok with negative feedback and poking a little fun at things. I do agree that their inability to separate fiction from reality is a little bit...disturbing at least but I can definitely also still find the humor in it all. :) Thanks for commenting on my post!
